How to choose a coffee table: height, size and sofa fit

By Bonideco

Choose a coffee table around sofa seat height, clear walking space and how you will use it. The right size lets you reach a cup, stand up comfortably and open drawers.

A small living room does not always need the smallest table. What matters is whether it fits beside your seating and keeps the route clear. In the coffee table category, filter for dimensions and construction before choosing colour. Here we compare a compact table, one with drawers and two different sets.

Coffee table height: start with your sofa

Measure seat height at the front edge and consider how much the cushion compresses when you sit. For a conventional low table, first try a surface near seat level or slightly below. This is a starting point rather than a mandatory standard: a high sofa, deep seating and the table’s purpose can change the choice. Sit down and check whether you can reach a cup without stretching.

For example, with a 42 cm seat, a 40 cm top is 2 cm lower. This is a measuring example, not a recommendation for every sofa. A small 50 cm-high table may work better beside the seating than in front of a low sofa. For computer work or regular meals, choose furniture designed for that purpose; a low coffee table does not automatically become a desk.

Mark the footprint with paper or removable tape on the floor. Sit, stand and walk to the other side of the room. If there are 160 cm between the sofa front and another piece of furniture, a 60 cm-deep table placed 40 cm from the sofa leaves 60 cm on the other side. This calculation only illustrates how space is divided: test whether the remaining route works in your home.

Include open drawers, a lifted lid, the unfolded sofa bed and the route to a balcony. Castors do not remove the need for space: you still need somewhere to move the table. Find more planning ideas in our small-room guide.

Round, rectangular or a coffee table set?

A round edge can make it easier to move around a table, but the diameter still takes up space in both directions. Having no corners does not make furniture entirely safe for children: assess stability, edges, materials and fixings.

A rectangular table can give a straight sofa a larger reachable surface. A square one may take too much depth in a narrow room. For an L-shaped sofa, measure the internal open area and route between the seat and chaise; the sofa’s overall length is not enough.

A two-table set can be split between seating positions. If you want to tuck one under the other, check height differences, frames and the manufacturer’s description: not every set is a nesting set. With a sofa bed, plan somewhere for both tables when the bed is unfolded.

Materials, drawers and lift-top mechanisms

Solid wood, MDF, metal and glass need different care. A wood grain or marble effect describes appearance, not necessarily the material. Check the substrate and finish separately. Use coasters suitable for the finish under hot or wet cups, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

Drawers conceal small items but need opening space. A removable lid reveals storage, although cups and decoration must be moved first. An open shelf gives quick access without protecting contents from dust. Compare internal storage measurements as well as external furniture dimensions.

For a lift-top or extending coffee table, check dimensions in both positions, locks, mechanism load limits and maintenance. A raised top is not necessarily intended for meals or work. The four models below are not presented as lift-top or extending tables. For colours, see our grey-interior guide.

Four coffee tables compared by purpose

We selected four different designs from the Bonideco catalogue. Dimensions and materials come from product descriptions; this is not a tested ranking. See product cards for current prices, delivery and availability. Ø means diameter.

Six checks before buying

  1. Measure sofa seat height and test reach.
  2. Mark the footprint and walk around it.
  3. Check drawers, the lid and the unfolded sofa bed.
  4. Compare external and internal measurements, material and finish.
  5. Check load limits, assembly and care in the specific product information.
  6. Plan space for every piece of a set.

Coffee table questions

How high should a coffee table be?

Start near sofa seat level or slightly below and test reach while seated. One height in centimetres does not suit every sofa.

Which table works in a small living room?

One that leaves your walking route clear and fits when drawers and the sofa bed are open. Round, small rectangular or split tables only work after checking the actual space.

Does a table set always save space?

No. Separate pieces can use more floor area. Tucking one under another requires a suitable design.

Is a marble-effect table made of marble?

Not necessarily. The effect describes the finish’s appearance; check the actual material in the specifications.

How should a table match a sofa?

First match height, reach and shape, then repeat a material or colour in the room. The table does not have to be the same colour as the sofa.
